Taking Advantage of Internal Mobility
I have had a variety of roles here at BCG over my 12 year tenure, due to their outstanding support regarding internal career mobility. When I started here, I was working in a team that oversaw all of tools that we needed to run our offices, like room booking systems for example. Then I moved to a consulting team that was back then called Toolbox. This would eventually become BCG GAMMA, a group within BCG that focuses on AI, data science, and advanced analytics related projects. On that team, I worked to create IT solutions for clients. I then became interested in working on the business support side of things and took on a role on our Change Management Knowledge Team. After five years in that role, I was once again ready for a change. At that time, BCG was just developing a new topic area called Large Capital Project Management (LCPM), which was very interesting to me. I became the Global Topic Manager for that, which was a very exciting experience. Because the topic was brand new, it was a great learning opportunity for me to discover how to help start something from scratch at such a big company.
My current role is the Global Product Manager for our Sales topic, which is similar to my previous role in the LCPM topic. As a Product Manager, I am responsible for developing and executing our strategy, marketing, product development, and stakeholder management for my topic. There is a lot of people management involved in the role as well. One thing I really enjoy is that I get to sit with leadership while we make the decisions about the topic agenda. It's really empowering to help influence the direction of the topic and to see the suggestions I make be put into action and bring value to the company and our clients.
A Journey of Learning and Growth
BCG has always supported my growth. A manager once told me that my trajectory at BCG has been very "colorful," and I think that's exactly right. I have never really done things by the book. I didn't have a plan for my career, I have always just tried to follow my interests. I think that's a perfect example of how BCG supports you. They have some more concrete, linear paths thatyou can follow, but you can also create your own path through internal mobility options. I think that's probably very useful for people who want to join BCG to know that. You don't have to follow the same track as everyone. Looking at where I started and compare it with what I'm doing now—it's completely different.
Before I started at BCG, my exposure to different industries was quite limited. I did not notice it then, but after these years at BCG I can now see the amazing range of knowledge I have collected. This is one of the key ways I keep motivated—not knowing the challenges I will be facing in the next project and having the ability to be constantly learning. I’ve really benefitted from the learning opportunities I’ve been given here. For example, I moved to our sales topic without having much of a background in sales. I think that's something that BCG is really supportive of—giving you the chance to explore different roles using the skills that you have and also the tools you need to build up the knowledge needed for that role. I love that BCGers are fast learners and that the firm gives us the tools we need to succeed. Throughout my time here, BCG has been very supportive of my aim to learn and to push myself out of my comfort zone. I’ve found there’s something fulfilling about changing directions and working on different things. You don't always have to be the deep expert.
