About Dorota

Dorota Przyborowska is a Senior People Manager in BCG's NextGen Ways of Working function based in our Warsaw office. She joined BCG as a consultant in 2012 after several years of international consulting for financial sector, but then decided to explore different career paths to pursue her other passion – people development. Outside of the office, Dorota finds peace in being active, exploring languages and cultures, and trying new things. She is also an avid hiker and recently fell in love with Corsica. But what brings her most joy is finding simple answers to the difficult questions her daughter asks.

Realizing My Passion

After several years of experience in another global consulting firm, I joined BCG as consultant in 2012 in the Warsaw office. It was exciting for me to not only join BCG, but to also return to my home country of Poland. At that point in time, my career path was focused on financial industry and I was working mostly in finance and risk management topics.

Upon returning from maternity leave a few years later, I felt that the passion for people I had always had take over. I felt more satisfied at work when accompanying others in moments of change, and experiencing their “aha” moments when they realized how move forward. This is the sort of impact that I loved to have. My career took a slightly different spin, and I took on a role in my home office. I focused on supporting teams and individuals to help them work more effectively together and achieve higher satisfaction and sustainability. I have since grown to become a Senior Manager, leading the NextGen Ways of Working flagship programme across our CEMA and WESA markets.

I’ve found that there is no such thing as a “normal” day in my job. Every day is different and that is what makes it so fascinating to me. A common thread in my days is talking with a lot of different people. There is a lot of exchanging ideas, brainstorming, and crystallizing strategies with people across different business units and levels of seniority. I am also coaching and mentoring our cadre of internal team performance coaches. In my position, I have the privilege of working with people ”at the rockface” and also with the global functions such as the firm’s executive committee members and sponsors of certain initiatives and programs. My breadth of interactions also transcends the core BCG as well as our speciality businesses.

Seeing Challenges as Opportunities

It’s not just a job, it’s a true passion that I’m pursuing here. I really enjoy the way we operate – we focus on the value the function brings and are attentive to changes in context and needs. The mentality at BCG is that challenges are opportunities to make something better. One of my most fulfilling moments of 2020 that reflected this mentality was when I oversaw the upskilling program for our NextGen coaches. Prior to COVID, their core training was done in person. Then in the blink of an eye, we had to make it virtual. Our goal was to make sure that virtualizing made the experience not just comparable, but in fact better, and to determine how a virtual format could help achieve that goal. We realized that sessions didn’t have to last two or three full days like they used to, so we completely revamped the trainings.

Sessions were spread across multiple days so there was space for attendees to immediately practice what was taught in the modules. This created an amazing opportunity because people were able to get much more out of the sessions, and bring in more thorough questions and experiences to the classroom. It also allowed us to shape sessions into a more experiential and immersive format. The overall programme became stronger, leaving people better equipped and engaged.

Finding a Home at BCG

I’ve spent a large part of my professional career at BCG. I was able to follow my passions and craft a path that suited different points in my life. I’m not an exception - there are so many opportunities to explore different career paths within the organization. You are allowed to shape your career and follow your evolving goals. Growing into a regional role also meant a change in perspectives which I truly enjoy – balancing between global consistency and local relevance. This ability to grow in different roles at BCG is tremendous.

I’ve always felt supported by BCG - both the company itself and the people who I work with. My role provides fantastic flexibility. This works extremely well for me now that I have a family. My colleagues understand that I have other priorities outside of work. They trust that I will get my work done, despite that I might be offline for two hours attending the school Christmas show or distracted while working from home when my daughter’s kindergarten closed due to COVID. I’ve seen this respect extended not just for parents too. For example, if someone wanted to take advantage of a flex working program to work on a personal project, they would also receive the same level of respect for their goals outside of work. There’s a message that your holistic life is important, whatever that is.

Beyond the opportunities presented at BCG, what keeps me here every day is the quality of people: their thoughtfulness, their energy, and their true commitment to improve and grow. On top of all these qualities, people here are very much down to earth. Over the years, many BCGers have become good friends. I see a strong future in my career at BCG. When I look up, I see many role models. I see people who are like me or who have the characteristics and skills that I am working on achieving, and it assures me that there is a place for me at BCG.
