About Jorge

Jorge began at BCG in 1996, holding a number of roles within our IT and Knowledge Team Analytics functions across our Munich, Boston, and Chicago offices, including Engineering Director and Global IT Director at BCG, responsible for leading the FSE (Flagship Software Engineering) team in the US. He left BCG as BCG Omnia Engineering Director TechOps & Infrastructure in 2019. He is now Director, Enterprise Architecture at Brookfield Properties.

Jorge has a bachelor's degree in computer systems engineering from the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey and is an expert in relational databases, software architecture, and management of complex software development projects, among other topics.

In Jorge's Words

At heart I'm a software engineer, so it was a surprise—after working for engineering and software development companies and freelancing—to find so much room for innovation and creative engineering at BCG.

Twenty years at BCG gave me the opportunity to work in many different areas, starting with enterprise systems software development and client-facing software product development—always with fantastic people and incredible teams. BCG's international and entrepreneurial environment allowed me to develop not only as an engineer, but also as a leader of the Flagship Software Engineering team, working in different cities and countries, from Munich to Boston and Chicago. It certainly kept my Spanish, English, German, and French going!

What did you learn in your first year on the job?

BCG makes things happen that would be impossible anywhere else. The dedication and determination of the staff is amazing. Being part of such a strong team made it a lot easier for every team member to perform to their true potential.

How did BCG help you grow and succeed?

It allowed me to live in different countries and work internationally. The cultural diversity of the staff and clients helped me remain open-minded and receptive to new and different ways to live and do things.

What were some of your favorite things to do outside of the office?

I'm an avid triathlete and love long distance racing—Ironman distance. I started running marathons, and then moved to triathlons. Now I can't imagine a day without a swim, bike, or run workout in preparation for a race.

Since leaving BCG, what interests have you pursued, personally and professionally?

Personally, I continue to spend as much time as possible with my wife and my daughter (now 6 years old!). I have been training to stay fit during the pandemic until triathlon racing is possible again.

How has your BCG experience benefitted your career since graduating from the firm? Are there any key lessons learned or professional advice that you still carry with you?

BCG's experience is invaluable! The key lesson I learned is that leadership matters, but most importantly why it matters. It goes beyond processes and organizations. Teams thrive in a strong culture of service when their leaders portray the company's values and core principles and when they share and agree on goals with their teams. This is seen specially now as we live through the pandemic.

Do you have a favorite BCG memory - a case team experience, tale from the road, break through with a client, or a story from the office?

For years, we had been struggling to support re-organizations with software, trying everything from complex spreadsheets to custom web applications. Then we came up with the idea of OrgBuilder, a desktop application (totally counterintuitive to the "web" thinking at the time) that was scalable enough to be deployed securely for any re-organization project. My fondest memory was that we deployed it for the first time, only 8 months after its conception. Today (more than ten years after its first release), it is a state-of-the-art re-organization SaaS tool used by hundreds of BCG clients!
